The Public Works Department consists of five separate divisions--Engineering, Administration, Water Utility, Streets/Field Operations, and the Wastewater Utility.

A great many functions considered to be public works are incorporated and administered within the City of Redding Public Works Department. The department also maintains over 400 miles of City streets and provides the engineering design, management, and inspection of $8,000,000 to $30,000,000 worth of public improvements annually. The department is able to perform its broad range of functions by having a highly skilled technical staff of 108 full-time members.

The position of Public Works Director is vacant at this time. Assistant City Manager Phillip Perry is currently providing department oversite.

Administration Division

This division performs the administrative function of the Public Works Department, which includes office services, record keeping, and coordinating with the public and other City departments. Engineering Division

The major function of this division is the design and contract administration of the 20 to 30 capital projects that are funded each year. Also included in this division is the land development section which reviews development plans for subdivisions, reviews maps and engineered improvement plans for compliance with City standards, issues permits for grading operations and encroachments into City streets, traffic engineering, and other related activities. Street/Storm Drain Division

The Streets and Parking Division is divided into three main areas--street maintenance, signs and painting, and downtown parking system. It is responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 400 miles of major arterial, collector, and residential streets, and sidewalks including bridges. The Storm Drainage Utility is responsible for installing, monitoring, maintaining, and cleaning the storm drain systems of the City. This division is also responsible for street sweeping. Wastewater Division

The primary responsibility of the Wastewater Utility is to operate, maintain, and protect the system that collects, treats, and disposes of the domestic and industrial sewage that is generated within its boundaries.
